Morning Rounds

The main message seemed to be "cautiously optimistic." we are in a
watch and wait status for the health of the remainder of his bowels.
Since they removed the 16cm of dead bowel they are optimistic that the
remainder of his bowel will start to heal. One of the labs they are
watching most closely is his lactate, which is down from over 3
yesterday to 2.2 this morning and they are about to draw again.
Anything under 1 is normal. I think this will be something that we
will reference a lot when rating his progress. He still has had to
have some blood and platelet transfusions and is still recovering from
the vomit he aspirated 2 nights ago. They are keeping him very
comfortable today so that it can be a day of rest for him. He is very
swollen and they are monitoring "SIRS" or systemic inflammatory
response syndrome which is to be expected post-op. The lil bug is very
distended and puffy which is going to be hard to watch get worse
before improving. They are also watching a dark spot on one of the
exposed bowel stomas to make sure that it does not grow which would be
a sign of tissue death rather than recovery- this would make mama very
sad! So let's not do that, k buddy :) I love the intensivist dr that
is on today (and yesterday), she is so sweet and I love her honesty.
She is the first one yesterday to actually tell me that he was going
to be ok. Although this was before surgery was part of the plan, she
also did a great job going through the entire spectrum of outcomes
with Ben and I in a way that was honest and real.

I can't wait to hold Evan again, I am so proud of how strong and brave
he is being. We are also watching Payton and Riley VERY closely. The
surgeons question their status multiple times a day. We have been
instructed that at any sign of decreased interest in feeds, lethargy
or change/blood in bowel they are to be driven here asap. Dr. Z meant
business with those orders! It's not because NEC is contagious or
anything but these identical bros like to do things the same- good or
bad! I did go home with Ben for a bit last night so I could get my van
as well. I got to snuggle my 3 other boys and give my mom a hug :)
(also my friend Marcie who was there helping my mom while Ben and I
were at the hospital. Brody and Grandma S are going to smash coconuts
today just like M used to do with her gpa ;) Thank you!)

L.O.V.E

As I find my way through my growing inbox of emails I came across the
link to our great friend and photographer Annie's blog! For those of
you that aren't on FB you can see one of the cutest pictures she
captured of the boys during a photoshoot of them at our house the week
they all found their way home from the NICU. Annie does amazing work;
we were lucky enough to find her when I was preggo with Brody and she
has been capturing stunning images of us ever since!

Just gave my baby a kiss!

He is out of surgery stable and only missing 16cm of his bowel. There is more bowel that looked sick but not necrotic so they are hopeful that it can heal medically. This is not the best case scenerio bit FAR BETTER than the worst case. We are so grateful for Dr. Z and his team for their exquisite care! 

He still has to be watched very closely for health of the remaining bowel and many other factors and we can expect him to still possibly get more sick before improving. He has 2 stomas of bowel exposed through his abdomen that will still have to be surgically attached and put back inside at some point. We have a very long road ahead of us but we are extremely happy with the progress that was made in the OR.

The decision was made

Even though Evan's xray did not show a perforation his labs were
declining showing that his ability to fight was being weakened. The
surgeon also did not like the fact that the redness on his belly was
spreading outside of the lines that were drawn on this morning meaning
that his belly was very sick. Only 10-20% of NEC cases cannot be
treated medically and need surgical intervention. We are confident in
Dr. Zs ability to bring back our fighter a better baby. We are
prepared for a long road as he will still worsen after the surgery and
it may be the first of many depending on what is found.

Thank you for lifting him up, Ben and I could not do this without you.

Almost 4am

I feel as though I am stuck in a bad dream, a very horrible nightmare.
I layed down on the bed next to Evan to try and get some rest at about
2am. This was after hearing the results of the 1am xray of "no changes
or free air found in the abdomen" which means they would continue to
treat him medically without surgical intervention at this point. The
earlier imaging study showed no vulvulous but could not rule out
malformation which can cause a critical vulvulous at anytime. The goal
now is to keep him stable and will redo the exam later to determine if
he has malformation or not.

At about 3am I awoke to the RN calling for Dr. V (ped intensivist dr)
for help. Evan had choked on some vomit which caused his heart rate to
drop. They asked me to step outside as they needed the space to put
him on a ventilator. This was very hard for me to do and I only wish
that I had Ben here to hold me through this. I am so thankful that he
is strong enough to be at home taking care of Payton, Riley and Brody
though.

They just repeated the abdomen xr series and his intestines are still
stable but a chest xr does show some fluid in his right lung so they
will keep him medicated and allow the vent to work for him while he
has some time to rest and heal.

Evan is a strong big brother to P and R and I know he will amaze us
all and pull through illness.

Evan update

Thank you all for your outpouring of love and prayers, we need it now
more than ever. I can't begin to tell you what we have been through,
but will definately have a book if I ever have the time to write it! I
may be able to provide quick updates from my phone while I am
utilizing the "pumping room" so I can send some milk home for my other
babes that I miss so much!

Evan has been initially diagnosed with a very severe case of
necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). And yes, it was probably missed on
Sunday in the ER, but let's not go there right now. If able to be
treated medically he will require 2 weeks of a lot of IV antibiotics
and will probably get worse before better. They have prepared us for a
possible ventilation as well. If this causes his bowels to perforate
survey will be needed asap so they are keeping a very close watch. He
is in radiology right now looking for a more severe condition of
twisting of the bowel as they want to rule that out as well, I am glad
that they are continueing to look and not settle with NEC right away.

Grandma Sharon is flying in tomorrow morning for some initial help. We
have great friends right now helping out with the boys as I needed Ben
here for support for a few hours. Thank you all!!

Prayer Request for Evan

Please pray for baby Evan. I am holding a very sick baby waiting for
the ambulance to get us from his peds office and transport us to the
pediatric ICU. His diapers are full of blood, his abdomen is distended
and he is very pale/cold. Please pray they diagnose and treat him very
quickly.

Evan and Mommy's Vacation in the Peds ER

"Poor lil bug" has been the phrase for the weekend for Easy-E! He started refusing his bottles on Saturday night and had to be woken up for each feed. By Sunday morning we were getting quite worry as he was really doing a 180 from his normal 'big boy" hungry-self! I called and talked to one of his neonatologists and she wanted me to take him to the Children Hospital's ER asap as she was worried about an infection. So, Mom had to pack up Evan and make our first solo trip to the ER and leave Dad at home in charge of the rest of the crew!

This was my first time to the Children Hospital on "the Hill" so I was kinda nervous navigating my way around with a sick baby in tow. I found the parking garage easy enough but wondered around looking for the elevator which I eventually found only to find it did not have a directory in it! I think I got off on 3 different floors looking for the dang ER :( I ended up walking outside and when I got to the main doors I saw a lovely sign for patient valet parking, now you tell me!! When we got to admitting Evan turned on his charm and got us escorted right back and roomed quickly. He was then seen by a team of residents and an attending who did a full review with me and checked E over. They started an IV as he was visibly dehydrated and ordered labs and a chest x-ray. Luckily the CXR came back negative for any aspiration in his lungs, good to know the thickened milk is doing its job.

After the IV fluids I was able to keep him awake long enough to eat a few ounces of milk which was an improvement. The labs that were done all take over a day to process and check for bacterial growth so we were asked to stay for observation. We spent the next 16 hours in an ER room where I eventually got a breast pump (thank goodness!!) and I just woke Evan up every few hours to try and get him to eat. After a few hours he started having horrendous smelling diarrhea which led them to believe he may have rota virus, we are waiting for results still. Unfortunately this is highly contagious so we are *praying* it does not take out the rest of the team at home!! They also finally ordered me a tray a food and I have to say that it was delicious! (or was it because it was 7pm and I only had 1 FiberOne bar all day??)

Take me home to see my Daddy and Brothers please!! We were discharged around 8am Monday morning with directions to follow up with our pediatrician on Tuesday and return if he quits eating or shows dehydration signs again. They should call us with lab results soon as well. It was soooo good to get home and see the rest of my babies (Brody, Riley, Payton, and Daddy!)

1st Family Walk

Since we are "confined" to the house with the boys to avoid RSV except for necessary appointments we decided we better take advantage of a dry afternoon to get some much needed fresh air for all. I think Riley enjoyed the walk the most, he was smiling in his sleep the entire time. The quad ABC Buggy was GREAT!! I was able to push it easily with one hand if needed and it did great "off-road" too. I don't think they make a better stroller for multiples (the only drawback is that it doesn't accommodate car seats; but as you can see it can carry kids, even in the top row, until they are about 4 yrs old). I love that it can easily be used as a double stroller as well (take off the top seats), which we have used to go to appointments and I would wear Payton in the baby k'tan wrap. They all seem to like being in the wrap with me around the house and I choose to wear Payton in it when we are out since he is the most compromised with his lung disease. I feel like it protects him the most from gawking onlookers ;) Speaking of onlookers, I think we could have easily caused a few car wrecks with the "rubber neck" drivers passing by! I guess we are quite the scene although I have learned to not make eye contact as this is all still so new to me too (I feel silly as I know I am walking around with a perma-grin on my face).

 Brody picked out his seat and asked to sit next to Riley, he said the top seats were too high and looked scary (which he said with a trembling lip~ his new "thing")

 Payton (these cute hats were knit for the boys by one of Brody's teachers at school, they have matching booties and are too cute! The teachers at B's school have been so great and have volunteered to come over someday when we are ready for a date night :) They are a great group of people that we feel very fortunate to have as a part of his life. We have Brody to thank for being such a charmer at school, he has quite the fan club there and we often find him in the office getting stickers, in the kitchen getting/helping with snacks, hanging with the owner John, etc. basically any "special task!"

Seriously, all three were screaming before Brody started to sing songs to them. They really do respond to their Big Brother's precious voice :) This comes in handy when our hands are full and someone needs soothing across the room, we just ask B to go and sing to his baby brother and this usually buys us some time!

Won't be the last time...

We were feeding the babies yesterday, Ben had two (each inclined in a boppy pillow) and I had one. Ben was quite interested in his March Madness b-ball games so when I glanced over and saw that it it looked like Payton was sucking down air I asked Ben if his bottle was finished. He looked at me confused, kinda like I was crazy! "What??" I asked. He asked me who I was feeding? I looked down and clearly saw Payton, oops, wrong baby. I simply told him that whoever that was he was feeding was sucking on air and we laughed. I wish I could say that this happened during a 3am feed, but no. Well, not that that really matters because with the amount of sleep we get every feeding feels like 3am, ha!

Oh, it was Riley who was sucking air. Which is also funny because the hour before I texted a pic of Riley to a handful of family members playing my usual "guess who?" game and the responses came back 50/50 between Riley and Payton! If I can't even tell them apart at times how am I to expect others to? ;)

My Dad and Liz just left (back to FL), I think it is safe to say they got an ample supply of Nana and Papa duties in (including MANY poopies, haha)! They got here when Evan and Riley were already home and were a part of Payton's welcoming home party :) Ben and I are very grateful for our wonderful parents and all of the support they each provide! It's nice to know that each one of them would hop on the next flight out if we ever had the need.

I can't believe our babes are "zero" today! They have come such a long way in the last 2 months and even in the last week! I put on newborn sized sleepers this morning and they finally fit! They outgrew most preemie clothes last week and fit best in the 5-8lb clothes now and some newborn sizes, little brutes I tell ya! Now that the boys are on the other side of their due date I expect them to start sleeping through the night and tolerating tummy time like big boys ;) HA!

They are progressing nicely though, they have improved leaps with the time it takes for them to eat, especially Payton. They are still on the thickened milk and will be at least until we have a follow-up swallow study done in a few weeks. This means still no breastfeeding and only pumping- such a drag!! Since I have to pump in addition to give bottles Ben and I both wake up for each feeding. It is working out nice for us and last night we cut out time up from about 90 minutes to about 60 minutes for each feed! The boys, in their old age, are getting better at settling back down to sleep after their bottle. They are POOPING MACHINES though! Seriously. So.Much.Poo. We are going to go broke on diapers alone~ so think twice before you buy them their next outfit, it's diapers they really need!! They all HATE having poopy diapers too, it's funny because Brody never made a fuss and we only knew when we smelt it. Not only can we smell these boys (cause they make some serious stink) but they scream bloody murder until they are clean and dry. Other than that they haven't started doing much else besides eating, sleeping and pooping. They are getting to be very strong though, their head/neck and leg strength is quite impressive for their size.

Nana and Papa Lippincott headed back to sunny Florida on Tuesday morning so we have been solo now and getting into our new routine. I know now that Ben's employment status was a blessing in disguise because we make quite the team here at home ;) We know it can't be this way forever (darn!), but we are enjoying the time we have now and plan to do so for a bit longer. All 3 have now only been home for a week and still have some work to do to catch up before I want to think about them not having one of us with them at all times.

I also have to say that triplet moms rule!! I am so fortunate to have met some amazing MOMs here locally, but also a few great ones online too! They are all so supportive and knowledgeable and most of all- inspiring! And it seems their kindness and generosity is endless. I just received a box full of "triplet" sleepers from a MOM of BBB trips in Dallas, TX! I previously ordered some clothes from her from the online Yahoo BBB clothing group (even then she sent me way more than I purchased!) and today received a completely unexpected box of newborn clothes for the boys, talk about random acts of kindness, J.K. you have some GOOD karma coming your way!!

Yahoo!! Dr. N agreed it was time for PJ to come home, but she wasn't happy with the -20g weight loss since he had lost for the last 5 days as well. So she made a deal that f is discharge weight was 3035g or higher he could still go home. We stuffed him full all day long and the champ weighed in at 3060g and got his ticket OUT!! Way to go P-man!!

Come on 3035g!!

3035grams is the number to beat in order to get Payton discharged tomorrow. Last night he weighed 3040g (6#11.3oz) which was down 60g from the night before and on a downward trend for the last 5-6 days. Dr. N will allow him to be dc'd as long as he doesn't lose more than 5grams when he is weighed tonight. Ben will be there for the 8pm cares that includes weights so I told him to put a lead weight in his diaper, haha! The thought is that the change in feeds due to the thickened liquids is what has caused this weight loss as Evan has also lost a bit and that it is nothing more serious. So we have altered the "concoction" a bit and are hoping that that does the trick and we will be on our way out.of.the.NICU.forever!!!

Tomorrow will be day 47 for Payton in the NICU and hopefully the last. It is really hard leaving him there now that he has become more alert like his brothers and not sleeping the entire the day. My heart breaks every time I leave there and he does a good job of keeping me there as long as possible by not settling down to sleep very easily, smart boy!

It is great to see him finally eating, breathing and pooping like a big boy! Way too big to be held up in the NICU ;) I am sure tomorrow will come with very mixed emotions- leaving somewhere that has been such a major part of our daily lives. We will be back to visit for sure, especially because I am not so much prepared to pay my respect tomorrow (with food of course) to the fabulous team that has seen us through this portion of the journey! We have some pretty strong feelings for some amazing Drs and RNs that we have been fortunate enough to have met along the way, we will miss them lots and be forever grateful for the support and care they provided.

Looking back....

is always so much easier than living through it! I had my 6 week post-partum appointment today and I got pretty emotional on the ride to the clinic. I have (now) such fond memories of the great care I received during my pregnancy. I had a little "family" that I started to see every week for quite some time and then I saw Dr. L and her partners everyday for the month I was in ante-partum. It's not that I was ever unhappy with my care, it was just a very high risk pregnancy that caused a lot of stress followed by many uncomfortable days towards the end. When I was pregnant all I wanted was for it to be all over; and now, looking back, all I can think about is the incredible experience I went through and question whether I knew that at the time. I think I felt the same way after I had Brody, that being pregnant wasn't that bad!! I guess that's why women like me who don't especially like being pregnant decide to do it all over again- because after birth we completely block out all of the negative memories that were once all consuming, ha!

I guess the purpose of this post is to thank everyone who had a hand in my care and saw me through the most difficult experience of my life (to date)! I am so fortunate to have had such a great Dr with a fabulous support staff that it makes me sad that I won't get to experience it all ever again. It was both the longest and shortest experience of my life.

**Ben, please don't have a heart attack when you read this- in NO WAY does this mean I want to have another baby!! I am just hormonal and nostalgic today, heehee.

It shouldn't be long...

and P-man will be home with his brothers!! We have made some significant progress over the last few days and couldn't be happier.

Payton's swallow study confirmed that he also was silently aspirating during his feeds, so he was also put on the "sludge" and his feedings have greatly improved. To keep things consistent we converted Riley's milk to the honey consistency as well and his reflux is much better. We are hoping that they will all outgrow this immaturity with their feeds very soon, but are happy for now mixing an even more complicated concoction for feeds (60cc of breast milk+enfacare calorie fortifier+simply thick). We have a major outing scheduled for the end of the week that could potentially be the 1st time our family of 6 will leave the house together! All the Waind boys will have an outpatient appointment with the speech therapist, even big brother Brody, whose appt was scheduled before any of this came up with the trips (he has been choking when drinking consistently).

Payton was also taken off his oxygen nasal cannula a few days ago (or more?? what day is it anyway??) He has done AWESOME and hasn't looked back since. We love looking at his pretty little face with less tape and tubes. The last tube to be pulled is his NG tube and we are hoping that will come out tomorrow.

We are very thankful for the care we have all received at the hospital but can't wait to NOT go back there for, hopefully, a very.long.time. We are getting much shorter and less frequent intervals of sleep since Evan joined Riley at home and the commute to and from the hospital adds one more layer to it all. Even with the sleep deprivation we couldn't be happier and can't complain...too much...if E and P could sleep less during the day and more (much more) during the hours of 11pm and 6am we would be ecstatic! They really have changed within the last week from sleeping all hours except when feeding to finally being awake much more, such big boys they are becoming!

Brody is adjusting well and continues to be a rockstar Son and Big Brother. He is currently enjoying his time spent with Papa Chris and Nana Liz! Our parental support continues to mean a lot to us, just having them all take turns here over the past months to make sure Brody is loved (read: spoiled rotten) is the best support of all as it gives us the time to get to know the trips and form a routine that we can manage for the months to come when the "honeymoon" phase is over, haha!

Another homecoming!?!!

The plan is that his 40th day (March 3rd) in the NICU will be his last! Dr. R has done all of the discharge paperwork for Evan and as long as he has another good night tonight we will be bringing him home tomorrow. With all of our home internet issues over the last week- we have some catching up to do!

Evan continued to have 1 spell a day, only after eating and during a burp. The rest of the day he was perfectly normal. We were able to get a swallow study done in Radiology yesterday morning to see if we could figure anything out. We had an awesome Radiologist who also specializes in peds and preemies, when I saw her personal red glittered lead fluoroscopy vest I knew I would love her! Evan did a great job drinking the barium, such a rockstar. They started out with breast milk consistency barium and within a few gulps it was immediately apparent that he was aspirating the liquid up his nasal passage and down his trachea instead of going just down the esophagus. They then had him drink barium with the consistency of nectar (not the taste though) and he did better, but not great- still aspirating. The honey consistency seemed to do the trick. After a feeding consult with speech therapy we now have to bottle feed breast milk to Evan the consistency of honey, or sludge as I like to call it.

This is a bummer since Evan is the best at breastfeeding :( This is going to make the bottle his primary feeder for the time being, we are hoping he will grow out of this quickly but will have to follow up with speech therapy as outpatients. The good news is that ever since he started drinking this sludge he has not had any spells! The Rad was very happy that this was caught early since Evan for the most part, handled the fluid aspirations very well, but in time could have led to pneumonia or other respiratory issues.

Payton is also going to have a swallow study this week to determine if he is identical to Evan- and why wouldn't he be!

"Frat Boys"

The day after Riley was discharged the NICU had a busy night with 5 new admits. This meant that we had a new baby join Evan and Payton since the room now had space and could be separated by curtain. We knew this was going to be temporary since the boys were going to make their 6th room change to another private room made for 1 or 2 babes. We only had one conversation with the baby's Mom since both families were always quite busy during the short "roomie" time, it went like this:

Other Mom said: Just in case you were wondering, we don't mind the music your boys listen to. Our son is too young to know anyways, so it's fine...

Brooke (was thinking: Uh, no, actually I wasn't wondering) said: Oh good, we love the Rockabye Baby Cds, we have Bob Marley playing now.

Other Mom said: Yeah, we joke about the Frat Boys next store and their loud music.

Haha, a reputation already.

Note: We were moved in to our own private room a few hours later. 

Settling in at home with Riley

After 34 days in the NICU we are adjusting to our new "normal" which is having Riley at home and Evan and Payton still in the NICU. We LOVE finally having a baby at home to cuddle :) Grandma Sharon is here for a bit which really helps with the multiple commutes we are still making daily. She is great at keeping Brody so busy and entertained he doesn't even know we are gone (well, he still misses us of course!) We are fortunate to have such awesome parents all around.

As much as we love Riley at home, we do think that he misses his brothers a lot!! He is such a snuggle bug, with Ben and I at home and with his brothers when we take him to the NICU to visit. I have some great pics to post but we are having home internet issues and waiting for a new router to arrive before I take the time to upload them, sorry! Riley also had his 1st pediatric appt on Monday and he checked out great! He weighed in at 6lb1oz, a long way from his lowest weight of 2lb15oz!!

Taking care of 1 baby is quite a change from the triple baby cares we have become accustomed to at the NICU, it is almost boring! haha. We should sleep more with the little downtime we have and have managed to get in an hour nap in afternoon on most days, which is nice. Although it may have been easier to have all 3 babies in one spot we couldn't be more happy and don't mind the added difficulty that this brings. We just hope that this all inspires Evan and Payton to pick it up and get discharged themselves!!
